Greg Shaw, chief judge of the Alabama Court of the Judiciary, today officially granted a continuance in the ethics trial of suspended Mobile County Circuit Judge Herman Thomas. The trial had been scheduled to begin Wednesday, but lawyers with the office of the attorney general withdrew from the case citing a "conflict of interest." Birmingham lawyer Doug Jones, a former U.S. attorney, has replaced the assistant attorneys general in prosecuting the case with the Judicial Inquiry Commission. Shaw called for a scheduling conference as soon as practical, after which a new trial date would be set.
