At Table
North Baldwin

By M.B.T. Gastronome
Had an interesting lunch experience today. Business carried me to Bay Minette for a morning meeting which concluded at straight up 12 noon. That created somewhat of a lunch dilemma for me, although I knew I had a few options in that part of the county.

The Stagecoach is always a good choice for a bountiful lunch. However, time constraints prohibited me from driving north.

In the past, Frazier’s in Bay Minette has been a good choice. This is a decent restaurant which offers a basic menu, good service and rather good food. According to the locals, Frazier’s is being forced to relocate, so I did not take the chance of going there and finding them closed. The explanation I received was that Walgreens had bought the property and planned a store for that location.

Then there is Streets. I have eaten there a few times before and have placed it on my “do not return” list. Yes, I realize Streets might be a local hangout for some of the political gossip crowd, but I have never found the food to be that good.

A couple of locals recommended Teresa’s, located on the west side of Highway 31, just south of the Faulkner entrance. I was tempted to give it a try, but the parking lot was overflowing (a good sign, I suppose) and I had too little time for a crowded venue. Not to worry, there are plenty of places on down the road.

Turning left off of Highway 31 on the Malbis Parkway, I was dismayed to see nothing but crowded restaurant parking lots all the way to I-10. Once again, too little time. So, westward ho.

In the past I would have stopped in Daphne at Woody’s for a quick lunch. It wasn’t the best barbecue around, but it was good and the service was always quick and efficient.  However, the building is now a bank.

Where do I eat? I have a meeting in less than an hour and I am famished. Driving the causeway, I impulsively turned into the parking lot at Blue Gill and enjoyed the lunch shrimp. Service was quick and the food was good. I won’t elaborate since I reviewed the Blue Gill not too long ago.

Any reader suggestions for next time I am over in that part of Baldwin County?

(Editor's note: Our pseudonymous gourmand visits area dining establishments and reports on the experience. Wherever food is served, our peripatetic critic is likely to arrive with an appetite and depart with an opinion. He dines at his own expense; remains anonymous to all; reports only on those restaurants he frequents in the regular course of life, primarily reasonably priced places. However, he does splurge on occasion. Bon Appetit!)
