At Table
A Potpourri

By M.B.T. Gastronome
This is somewhat an atypical review in that it doesn’t focus on any one particular restaurant. Rather, it refers to three places I have visited recently.

In the not-too-distant past, I visited Ed’s Seafood Shed and wrote a very negative review. It was an accurate review, however, since the fried shrimp that day was not up to par. I decided to give Ed and Barbara another shot, so I lunched at Ed’s this past week. This time I ordered the grilled shrimp platter with a side of grits. The meal was very good. So good, in fact, that I have accepted an invitation from a Baldwin County acquaintance to lunch there again next week. Thanks, Ed and Barbara, for providing a good lunch experience; however, your gumbo is still just not my cup of, well, gumbo.

July 4th is always a good time for a rack of baby back ribs. This July 4th was no exception as my lovely dining companion and I each consumed a rack of baby backs at Dick Russell’s. The ribs were tender, tasty and very, very satisfying. Sides consisted of slaw, barbecue beans and potato salad. They, too, were good. This was not our first Independence Day baby backs at Dick Russell’s and it won’t be the last.

A late Saturday breakfast found us at IHOP on Airport Boulevard near McGregor. When we arrived at 11 a.m., the parking lot was full, the restaurant was full, and there was a line waiting to be seated. We dutifully took our number and waited for a table. After about a ten minute wait, we were seated. Breakfast was typically IHOP, nothing spectacular, but just good and filling. We usually make it to IHOP about once per month for breakfast and prefer this location to the one in Tillman’s Corner.

(Editor's note: Our pseudonymous gourmand visits area dining establishments and reports on the experience. Wherever food is served, our peripatetic critic is likely to arrive with an appetite and depart with an opinion. He dines at his own expense; remains anonymous to all; reports only on those restaurants he frequents in the regular course of life, primarily reasonably priced places. However, he does splurge on occasion. Bon Appetit!)
