Raising Cane's

By M.B.T. Gastronome
“Uncle Gas, you gotta try that place. It’s good.”

In spite of this rousing recommendation from my nephew, I was hesitant, because I don’t do chicken fingers. I’ve tried them several times, but just cannot bring myself to consider them a constant food source.

Some folks in other parts of our great state swear by Guthrie’s (one is coming soon to Hillcrest), but Guthrie’s is an establishment worthy of avoiding. Locals speak well of Zaxby’s, but that, too, is worthy of a drive by. Then, of course, there is Foosackly’s, the seemingly favorite hangout of the college crowd. I don’t go there either. I just don’t do chicken fingers. That is, until this week.

Following the advice of my nephew, a rising star in law enforcement, I decided to venture out to Airport Boulevard near the mall and give Raising Cane’s a try. I selected the #1 combo, consisting of four chicken fingers (Why do they call them fingers?), fries, Texas toast, sauce and a drink. Overall, it was a pleasant fast food experience.

I don’t rate the chicken fingers as excellent. In fact, I believe “excellent chicken fingers” is an oxymoron. I do, however, rate them as quite good. They are tender and tasty, not the usual flat and tough chicken fingers found at most fast food places. The key at Cane’s is the sauce.  It is a remoulade style sauce with just a little kick (not quite enough kick for me) that provides a pleasant taste.  I used it to dip not only the chicken but also the fries and the last bite of toast.

For a quick in and out meal at a reasonable price, Raising Cane’s is okay. Drop in and give this place a try. And when you are there, be sure and ask Matt about the dog.

(Editor's note: Our pseudonymous gourmand visits area dining establishments and reports on the experience. Wherever food is served, our peripatetic critic is likely to arrive with an appetite and depart with an opinion. He dines at his own expense; remains anonymous to all; reports only on those restaurants he frequents in the regular course of life, primarily reasonably priced places. However, he does splurge on occasion. Bon Appetit!)
