At Table
Veet's

By M.B.T. Gastronome
It was slightly more than three months ago that I first ate at Veet’s Bar & Grill on Royal Street. During that initial review, I mentioned the Friday buffet and my intention to give it a try. Today was the day and I was not disappointed.

For a grand total of $10.25 (beverage and tax included) my companions and I enjoyed a very tasty lunch buffet which included seafood choices. The fried shrimp seemed to be everyone’s favorite and our table consumed a large amount of shrimp that was hot, well fried and appropriately seasoned. Every time the buffet pan ran low, someone emerged from the kitchen with yet another large bowl of replacement shrimp. The shrimp by itself would have provided a sumptuous lunch.

There was fish also. I’m not sure what type of fish it was, but it was quite tasty. And, of course, there was the ever present and always delicious fried chicken. There were some small stuffed crabs also, but I did not try one of these. I could not get away from the shrimp, fish and chicken.

The usual side dishes were present along with a well stocked salad bar. One dish, though, intrigued all at our table. None of us was certain if it was a side dish or an entrée. We were certain, though, that it was very, very good. It consisted of sausage, shrimp, green beans, onions and who knows what else. It was delicious!  Insofar as consistency, it was more like a Hungarian gulyás, but without beef. Although it was not served as such, it would have made a fantastic soup.

Dessert was a very tasty, and very rich, pie. Although it did not appear to be homemade, it was, nonetheless, very good.

Did I enjoy this Friday lunch buffet? You had better believe I did. Today’s lunch experience was just as good as the recent lunch experience at Café Royal was bad.

In the words of Douglas MacArthur, “I came through and I shall return.”

(Editor's note: Our pseudonymous gourmand visits area dining establishments and reports on the experience. Wherever food is served, our peripatetic critic is likely to arrive with an appetite and depart with an opinion. He dines at his own expense; remains anonymous to all; reports only on those restaurants he frequents in the regular course of life, primarily reasonably priced places. However, he does splurge on occasion. Bon Appetit!)
