Bonner announces grants exceeding
$3.28 million for area airports

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner (R-AL) today announced the award of funding to four airports in southwest Alabama from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration.

The Mobile Regional Airport will receive $2,441,645 to fund the installation of a sprinkler system in the terminal building, relocate the emergency exit stairwell, replace lighting fixtures in the main lobby of the terminal building, and improve access roads.

The Atmore Municipal Airport will receive $289,750 to acquire property to establish runway protection zones.  A runway protection zone is an area off the end of a runway that is intended to be clear of people and buildings.  By acquiring a runway protection zone, the airport can ensure adequate control over the land to prevent people from gathering or businesses developing on the property.

The Dauphin Island Airport will receive $450,000 to acquire property to establish a runway protection zone for runway 30.

The Bay Minette Municipal Airport will receive $100,000 for the installation of a security fence at the terminal area as well as the aircraft parking apron.

"I commend the FAA for providing this funding for these airports in southwest Alabama," Bonner said.  "Just this month, our area learned we will be the site of the largest economic development project in the United States, and improvements to our area airports will provide even greater accessibility to our region."
