Shelby: Mobile is
the Right Choice
EADS North America selects Mobile for tanker facility
WASHINGTON, D. C.– During a press conference today, U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) applauded an announcement by EADS North America that Mobile has been selected as the location for the EADS KC-330 advanced tanker production facility.
“There is no question that EADS North America made the right choice. Mobile is the ideal site for this project as it provides proximity to an airport and coastal waters, access to a deepwater seaport, and significant space to grow and expand,” stated Senator Shelby.
“This new facility will bring good, high-paying jobs to the area, continue Mobile's expansion into the aerospace industry, and guarantee continued economic growth on the Gulf Coast. Alabama offers an outstanding, highly-qualified aerospace workforce, and I believe that the new Engineering building that we hope to begin this year at the University of South Alabama will be a strong supporter and supplier of the workforce at this facility over the long-term,” Shelby added.
“Modernization of the U.S. Air Force's aging tanker fleet is vital to America's defense and homeland security, and I am proud that Alabama is positioned to play a role as the future home of the KC-330 facility. Our country’s military strength relies on a competitive industrial base, and I fully support an open and fair competition in the Defense Department’s selection of the Air Force’s next tanker aircraft.”
“Finally, I want to congratulate the City of Mobile for their hard work in demonstrating to EADS why they were the ideal choice for this project. The tremendous community support was vital during the selection process,” Shelby concluded.
The selection of Mobile as the future site of EADS North America’s tanker industrial facility ends a five-month search that commenced with more than 70 sites expressing interest.
