Lathan letter on Steele

Longtime Republican leader Jerry Lathan of Mobile sent the following letter to members of the Alabama Republican Executive
Committee regarding
national GOP chairman
Michael Steele.

Dear Fellow Alabama
Republican Executive
Committee Members:

I very rarely make a public statement of this type, but I believe circumstances require me to share a concern I have with our Republican National Committee. Chairman Michael Steele has been the subject of a number of negative stories recently. Most concern reckless and irresponsible spending by the staff, and several instances where the Chairman personally ran up extraordinary expenses. According to federal disclosure records, the RNC spent $17,514 on private aircraft in the month of February alone as well as $12,691 on limousines during the same period. According to news reports, a February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and $6,596 at the Four Seasons Hotel. In fact, several months into Mr. Steele’s term as RNC Chairman his spending spurred a resolution requiring checks to be signed by at least two RNC officers, and contracts over $100,000 to go out to competitive bidding.

This exhibits poor leadership in the most prosperous of times. In this tough economy with news of 10% unemployment, and ever increasing taxes from the Democrats, this is unconscionable.

I have spoken to our three representatives on the RNC, Chairman Mike Hubbard, Paul Reynolds and Bettye Fine Collins and they know of my concerns. They each share these concerns. I hope you will join me in asking them to ask Chairman Steele to resign for the good our Party,  for the good of our campaigns this November and for the good of our country.

Donors are expressing reluctance to give to our Party because they are concerned the money may not be used properly. We cannot allow a distraction like this to cost us momentum, and ultimately seats in Congress.

I am sure Mr. Steele is a good man, but his conduct and lack of firm control is costing our Party and our Nation. I am attaching the contact information for our representatives on the RNC and ask that you share your thoughts with them.

Please call or write now. The RNC meets in June. If Chairman Steele steps aside now, a new Chairman can have plenty of time to right our ship and win a great victory for America in November.

Most Sincerely Yours,
Jerry Lathan
