What's Bitin' Now?
Cobia ("Ling") - When the wind is calm, the cobia are out in full force.
Speckled Trout - Still showing up on the Shoals. After the weather settles down, they will start hitting on the beaches and the cut at the west end of Dauphin Island. Don't forget the bigger trout will be in the deeper water. Also, the inshore reefs in Perdido Bay have been good for average sizes.
Redfish - There are reports of good catches on the inshore reefs.
Mobile Bay
The recent heavy rains have muddied the Bay and the strong onshore winds have kept the water churned up. Some good redfish catches are coming from the inshore reefs and a few speckled trout are still showing up on the Shoals. Once the weather settles down the trout should start showing up on the beaches at Sand Island, and the cut at the west end of Dauphin Island. Live shrimp under a cork work best, however, bait is still tough to find. The rigs in the Bay should start holding fish in a couple of weeks. Once the rivers fall out, the waters should clean up and the bite will be on!
Lower Alabama
The inshore reefs in Perdido Bay have been producing some average size trout. Reports of top water action on the grass beds at the east end of Old River are trickling in. When the wind has calmed, the cobia fleet has been out in full force. One observation on Sunday indicated 35 boats in one stretch of beach in front of the Flora-Bama. The water is clearing up faster than the Bay. We’ve had reports that heavy night time gill net activities have pretty much wiped out the Spanish mackerel schools for the daylight anglers. Night time fishing with live shrimp or small jigs is really improving. Don't forget that bigger trout are going to be in the deeper water along the edge of a drop off.
Please be careful and quiet when anchoring close to others. Idle in and idle out. It's always appreciated. A whole lot more people are fishing this year and everyone can help by showing courtesy.
