Royal: It's a two-way street
Mobile Mayor Sam Jones will throw the switch to make Royal Street a two-way thoroughfare Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 11:45 a.m. at the corner of St. Louis and Royal Streets.
The conversion is intended to make downtown more driver and pedestrian friendly. Such changes in infrastructure should support downtown redevelopment, according to city officials. A pedestrian-oriented street system with easy access to multiple venues is helpful in promoting downtown redevelopment, according to authorities.
The Royal Street conversion includes seven new traffic signals at a total cost of about $350,000. Royal Street was originally a two-way street, before becoming one-way in the 1960s.
Other revisions to downtown streets are in the planning stages. See map.
