Randy McKinney leads dash for cash
in Baldwin GOP battle for senate seat

Randy McKinney was far and away the leading fundraiser in the weeks leading up to the Aug. 7 GOP primary special election for the Baldwin County state Senate District 32 seat that became vacant when Bradley Byrne resigned to become chancellor of Alabama's junior college system.

McKinney raised $176,424.86 between June 25 and July 30, according to his 5-to-10 day pre-election financial report filed Aug. 2 with the Secretary of State's office.

More than the other four Republican candidates, McKinney benefited from the support of political action committees. McKinney is a real estate professional in Gulf Shores and a member of the state school board.

Eastern Shore businessman and political newcomer Trip Pittman showed contributions totaling $55,116 for the period between the 45-day pre-election report and the 5-10 day filing.

Baldwin County Commissioner David Ed Bishop had the third strongest showing, generating $36,455 in contributions.

GOP county chairman Don McGriff reported contributions of $21,590.

Former state Sen. Albert Lipscomb trailed the field with $8,470 in itemized and non-itemized contributions.

By a huge margin, McKinney outspent his competition, reporting expenditures for the period of $131,752.71 to Pittman's $58,287.97, Bishop's $36,953.74, McGriff's 27,565.62. and Lipscomb's $7,454.90.

It was Pittman, however, and not McKinney, who entered the closing days of the campaign with the biggest balance. Pittman showed $51,602.03 still in the tank. McKinney reported a balance of $45,107.15; Bishop, $28,161.45; McGriff, $7,653.38; and Lipscomb, $4,018.62.

Major donors to the various contenders were as follows:

McKinney:

Pittman:

Bishop:

McGriff:

(McGriff also reported in his 5-10 day pre-election filing the return of an earlier contribution of $2,500 from the Arbor Committee.)

Lipscomb:
