Semmes playground dedication set

The Semmes Community Playground will officially open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m., Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine announced.

The public is invited to attend. The playground is located at 10141 Moffet Road, behind the Semmes Community Center.

The playground is the first park of its kind to be constructed in Semmes to serve the citizens of the western corridor.

For years, the citizens of Semmes and the surrounding areas have had to use other parks for recreational activities, said Nodine. Nodine said the funding and revitalization of parks and recreational facilities had been a priority with him since taking office.

"Now the citizens of Semmes and Northwest Mobile County will have access to their own community park," said Nodine. "This is a major investment in county resources that ensures a safe and healthy environment for families and especially children."

The 10,400 square foot park was built directly behind the Semmes Community Center at a cost of about $600,000. Other recreational capital investments in the Semmes area include a $300,000 upgrade to the soccer field at Mary G. Montgomery High School and building $800,000 worth of sidewalks in the area, for a total of $1.7 million in community improvements.

The Mary G. Montgomery marching band and cheerleaders will be on hand to help with the celebration. The cheerleaders will vie  in the nationals competition in two weeks. A color guard also will take part in the festivities.

Nodine said he considered the Semmes Playground and other park renovations to be "quality of life issues."

In addition to the playground equipment, the project included the construction of  picnic pavillions,  a walking trail and bathroom facilities.
