Shelby announces funding
for south Alabama projects

WASHINGTON, DC Tuesday, July 10, 2007 -- U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL), a member of the Financial Services Appropriations Subcommittee, announced subcommittee approval of the fiscal year 2008 Financial Services Appropriations bill, legislation including funding for several projects in South Alabama.

Following today’s action by the subcommittee, the bill will now go to the full Appropriations committee for consideration.
The projects include:

This funding will allow site preparations and final construction of a new federal courthouse in Mobile. The site selection and building design were conducted by the General Services Administration. The project is on the judiciary’s prioritized list for fiscal year 2008.

“Mobile has expanded significantly in recent years,” said Shelby. “A larger judicial caseload and the need for critical infrastructure come along with any community’s growth. This new facility will correct space and security deficiencies for the Mobile court.”

The Mitchell College of Business will use this funding for its new library, reading room, and career resource office.  The University has raised $1.4 million in private donations for this project.

“A well stocked library is a critical resource for students,” said Shelby. “The University of South Alabama’s Mitchell College of Business has consistently shown that they train the leaders of tomorrow. The library will help students equip themselves with the knowledge they need to be successful in the business world.”
